Review of the 9th Natural Conference

The 9th Natural Conference occurred on Sunday, August 13th through Wednesday, August 16th, 2000. Many reported the conference was timely, useful and most of all informative. Here are a few testimonials that were offered up on SAG-L.

I really enjoyed the NATURAL Conference in Boston with its  60+ presentations.
There were so many hits, among them:

1. Web Enabling NATURAL Applications Class, Rosanne Verteramo, SAGA
2. NATURAL Directions and Futures, Heinz-Otto Lehn, SAGD
3. NATURAL for the Next Three Years, Michael Muenster, SAGD
4. The Elderly and the Internet, Dr. Peter Pagé, Business Consultant
Allowing  NATURAL to Directly Interface to the Web, Dr. Peter Pagé,

Peter Pagé's first presentation was very entertaining and enlightening. Although he no longer works for SAG, he put NATURAL into perspective, showing that in the old monolithic era NATURAL was a great tool; the event-driven programming paradigm of the PC era made NATURAL a not-so-good tool but the web can make
NATURAL a great tool again because of the synchronous nature of web communications.

Pagé's second presentation, about the possible development of a NATURAL Web Driver by a company that he provides services to, was technically sound and very motivational.

Although I did not attend Ducks Unlimited presentation, their presentation the year before at SAGATech had already impressed me. I enjoyed my conversations with the developers of NATURAL and the info that they provided about the future of NATURAL. I also savored my encounters with old friends who I haven't seen in
many years and will take full advantage of my free copy of NATURAL 4 NT.

The NATURAL Conference was such an incredible event.  The technical presentations, the caliber of the presenters, the food, the boat tour, everything was great and the lobster dinner on Monday was unbelievable. I have to say that Jim Wisdom and his crew outdid themselves, this was the best NATURAL conference that I have ever attended.

I agree with Paul that the Ducks Unlimited Natural/Web interface was the hit of the conference.  Mike Conchatre gave a live demo that even included generating and changing programs on the fly (very brave in front of 100+ fellow programmers!) and hammered us with his claim that 3270 screens are dead.  I think most who
saw the demo would agree.  The elegance and power of Ducks' system generating web forms tailored to each user blew away all other solutions that I saw.  You can visit www.ducks.ca and see the public pages but you have to see the demo of the employee screens to get the full impact.

The other highlight of the conference for me was getting to chat with Peter Page' and his wife Margo (please forgive my spelling), and in effect thank him for my career.  He is currently helping a German company who is developing a product called the Natural Web-Driver that will allow running your current 3270 applications
through a web browser and not lose the "state" of the session. You can visit www.macros.de/natural/index.htm and see more.  I liked this approach for those who can't replicate what Ducks Unlimited has done right away.

Lastly, I took the full day class on XML and I am convinced that it is the main technology to allow business to business data interchange.  Steve Hamby of Software AG, Inc. did a great job on short notice to present the subject to us.

All around, a lot of new material to build on!

Monday Night at the Aquarium:

Here are some pictures that we took of everyone having fun at the Boston Aquarium.

Interesting Boston Web sites:

There are four Web sites of interest which will provide useful information about Boston, and they are www.globe.com, www.digitalcity.com/boston, www.ci.boston.ma.us and www.boston.com/artsboston
